We all want our wedding day to be perfect, from the dress, through to the venue, to the cake. The wedding cake is one of the first thing guests see when they enter the venue, with lots of photos of the happy couple cutting and enjoying the cake. The cake needs to look beautiful, taste delicious and reflect the theme of the wedding perfectly.
There are several types of cake out there, and sometimes it is hard to know where to begin when it comes to picking your dream wedding cake!
We’ve come up with three questions to consider when thinking about the perfect cake to complement your wedding day.
- What style of wedding cake do you want?
You will want your cake to suit the theme of your wedding or your own unique style.
If you are having a seasonal wedding, you may want your cake embellished with flowers or fruits. You may want your cake decorated with the colours of your wedding theme. You may even want your cake decorated in the style of a book, film or sports team that is dear to you both.
There are also a lot of varieties of cake to consider when planning your dream cake. Do you want a certain type of icing? How many tiers do you want? Are there any dietary requirements you need to take into consideration?
If you are looking for an alternative to the traditional tiered wedding cake, there are different options too. For example, you can have cupcakes, doughnuts or cake pops… one couple had a massive stack of brownies as an alternative to a cake!
One thing to bear in mind is you need to be careful with certain cake types at your venue. For example, a buttercream cake at and outdoor tented wedding run the risk of having bugs land on the buttercream and get stuck so fondant is a suggested covering for an outdoor wedding and the cake can not be in direct sunlight
Our top tip is to think of two or three different ideas and take them to your cake artist, who will be able to help turn your dreams into reality!
- What flavour wedding cake do you want?
Many years ago, the only choice when it came to wedding cake flavours was plain sponge or rich fruit cake. There are now a variety of different flavours you can enjoy on your big day. From big flavours like red velvet and salted caramel to delicate flavours like elderflower and lemon, the only limit is your imagination!
Can’t decide on one flavour? No problem! You can have different flavours running through each tier of the cake to create the perfect combination.
Our top tip is that you will not be able to please everyone with cake flavours. Choose the flavours that you both will enjoy. It is your day after all!
- What is your budget for a wedding cake?
A large cake with a complicated design is going to cost more than a small, simple cake. When you are working out your wedding day budget, you need to factor in how much you are happy to spend on your cake.
If you have your heart set on a particular cake but haven’t got the money to spend, speak to your cake artist who may be able to suggest a workaround for you. For example, simplifying the cake design or reducing the number of tiers may make your cake more affordable. Making some tiers fake is also an option.
